John struck Mexico’s southern coast on Monday night after rapidly strengthening into a major Category 3 hurricane, triggering warnings of ‘life-threatening’ floods and mudslides.

PUERTO ESCONDIDO, Mexico (AP) — Two people are dead after former hurricane John barreled into Mexico’s southern Pacific coast, blowing tin roofs off houses, triggering mudslides and toppling scores of trees, officials said Tuesday.

Two major weather systems are bringing heavy rain, high winds and more to Mexico’s southern Pacific coast on one side and the Caribbean on the other.
