PUERTO ESCONDIDO, Mexico (AP) — Two people are dead after former hurricane John barreled into Mexico’s southern Pacific coast, blowing tin roofs off houses, triggering mudslides and toppling scores of trees, officials said Tuesday.

Hurricane John swept through Mexico's southern Pacific coast Monday night, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The storm's devastating impact has resulted in at least two fatalities and widespread damage across the region.

Two people died when the storm sent a mudslide crashing into their house on the remote mountain of Tlacoachistlahuaca, further from the coast, Guerrero Gov. Evelyn Salgado said. A third death occurred in Malinaltepec when a landslide hit the home of a 70-year-old woman, according to Guerrero state officials.

Hurricane John is forecast to bring severe weather to the southern Mexico coast, including life-threatening flash flooding. Track its path.

Hurricane John struck Mexico’s southern Pacific coast with life-threatening flood potential after growing into a major hurricane in a matter of hours. It came ashore near the town of Punta Maldonado late Monday night as a Category 3 storm with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph (190 kph).
